The most common truck wheel width remains a good 9 inches wide, with the most popular sizes being 17x9 and 20x9. If you want to go even wider, most manufacturers have 10-wide options for their wheels you can opt for, and there'll be plenty of high-quality tires that can fit these too.

There's nothing wrong with going with the most popular size, especially to start - plus, most manufacturers know this, so their flagship wheels will be offered in all the best designs, ready for the taking.

What Diameter Is Best For Which Truck Wheel Types?

Of the two components of wheel sizing, width is probably the most pronounced one, as wider wheels naturally will stick further out of your wheel well, and you might need to do some modifications to alleviate any rubbing that might happen. But what about diameter?

Well, it depends on what you want to use your truck for. Smaller mid-size and off-road trucks will likely need smaller wheels around 16 to 17 inches tall. This is because smaller wheels can fit much larger tires in the space it takes to fill in a wheel well, and for the most part, more rubber is a much better look on Jeeps, Broncos, Dodge Dakotas, etc.

If you have larger half-ton and full-ton pickups, though, we'd recommend looking for 18-inch and 20-inch wheels to start your search. Again, these are the most popular large sizes and will have the most amount of compatible tires to match.

What Is A Bolt Pattern And How Can I Find It On My Truck?

In case you're wondering, a bolt pattern refers to the number of holes drilled into the center of the wheel and how far they are apart; they'll usually differ by vehicle. For example, the bolt pattern on current-gen Ford F-150 trucks is 6x135mm, meaning there are six lug holes drilled into the wheel, measuring 135 millimeters (5.31 inches) from top to bottom.

How Does Offset Work For Truck Wheels?

We're not gonna get too deep in the weeds when it comes to offset, so just know that these measurements refer to the distance between the mounting surface of your wheel and the center of the wheel - a positive offset means the wheel will be tucked in towards the center, and a negative one means that it will stick out.

Our example from earlier is a 20x10 wheel with a -25mm offset. This means that the wheel will stick further out of your wheel well than one with 0 offset would - many show truck models will have offsets in the negative 50s to the 80s, but keeping that number closer to zero will do you well in most cases.
